GUIDED TOUR OF SOFIA  and  VITOSHA MOUNTAIN – 6h

Like any modern European capital, Sofia too, is the country’s main political, social and business center, the hub of an active cultural life.

Born 7000 years ago and preserving unique architectural monuments, the Bulgarian capital today is a genuine treasure for those who value antiquities, blending harmoniously with the city’s modern appearance.

The sightseeing tour passes through the St. George Rotunda (4th c. AD)- fine monument of Roman architecture, the Sl. Sophia early Christian basilica (6th c.) that gave the city its name and the St. Alexander Nevsky Memorial cathedral with its golden domes, impressive interior, exquisite murals, icons and colorful mosaics, the building of Parliament and more….

Vitosha is the part of the Sofia’s landmarks. Known, as “the Lungs of Sofia” is attractive during any season. There’s no better place to observe Sofia from. It consists primarily of granite rocks, but there are karst rocks as well especially in the southern part. A unique natural phenomenon are the so-called “stone rivers” (moreni) – piles of huge rounded granite stones along many of the river valleys, reaching up to 2 km in length and 50 m in width. Especially expressive and beautiful are the moreni in the Zlatni Mostove area (Golden Bridges). Similar phenomena can be seen in other Bulgarian mountains, too, the Vitosha moreni however being unique. They are the symbol of the mountain.

SOFIA- PLOVDIV – BACHKOVO MONASTERY

The country’s second largest city is older than Bulgaria itself, cosmopolitan and captivating it blends the dynamic beat of the present and the intransigent values of its six millennia long history.

In 342 BC Philip II of Macedon conquered the Thracian town of Evmolpia leaving its name – Philipopolis. At the start of our millennium the Romans conquered the city.

During the 19th century Bulgarian master builders erected the National Revival city of Plovdiv (the Old Town) with steep cobbled streets, lovely houses with large bay windows and slender columns, latticed eaves and heavy quiet green yards and rippling marble fountains.

Old Plovdiv, representing innumerable monuments from different periods, is a living museum with performances in the antique Roman Theater.  One can still feel the atmosphere and the tranquillity of the past – just a step away from the real world.

Bachkovo Monastery is built in 1038 by the Bakuryani brothers from Georgia. The monastery contains a rich library and museum collection. It is the second by importance in Bulgaria.

SOFIA- KOPRIVSHTIZA

A small mountain town zealously keeps the reminds of its past glory. Every house here is an architectural masterpiece as well as part of Bulgarian history.

Koprivshtiza museum town offers a stroll in an authentic 19th century atmosphere: white stone walls, overgrown with ivy and wild geranium fence the gardens full of flowers; vaulted stone bridges run across the bubbly river; heavy, iron-studded gates hide blue, yellow and red houses with verandah, bay windows and eaves. Cosy small restaurants in typical Bulgarian style offer delicious Bulgarian cuisine.

Escape from the modern world and enjoy the tranquillity of the past!
